The Order of Gentlemen made an emotional return to the Crafty Cock in Billingham. Once the home of Mohujos Mexican restaurant, this was the very first venue the original ‘Thursday Night’ meal club visited with Stan, Don and Gordon all those years ago.
We had almost a full compliment but Knowla went AWOL at 20.58 on the Wednesday. Simon made his first start of the season and looked in good shape especially since he had recently removed his Grandad ‘hair’!! The things you do for ‘Arts’ !
We met in the Station Pub for predrinks. The two Marks were the designated drivers and the laddie banter was soon in full swing.
We safely crossed the road to the restaurant and were warmly welcomed. The drivers had coke and Heineken Zero while the rest tried the Camden IPA, Camden Hells and the excellent Czech Pardal Lager.
In no time at all the witty anecdotes and stories from bygone working days were in full swing, my apologies to Mark who had to endure my hilarious ‘Alan Barwick’ recital for a second time in 6 days !!
Tim wasn’t sure whether he was a drinker or a non-drinker, but that’s Tim for you.
After studying the menu, we all decided to embrace the Tapas theme, we forwent the starters and each chose four individual selections which would all come together. That was perhaps our downfall, which is eight people with four choices each, making a total of thirty-two portions. No wonder it took well over an hour for the first of the meals to arrive. Still, we were able to sample another couple of rounds of drinks. The ambiance was overflowing with good humored leg pulling and laughter. We were expertly looked after but to be honest it did take a noticeably long time to be served.
The wide variety of Tapas were; meatballs (excellent),fish taco, garlic mushrooms, chicken tikka masala, belly pork (cooked to perfection), Mexican mini parmo, beef taco (a bit too oily), ham croquettes, cauliflower croquettes, gambas pil pil, Korean chicken (succulent), roasted peppers (boring), Halomi and several portions of salt and pepper chips.
The Dining experience was up there with the best. Some even managed deserts; sticky toffee pudding, cheesecake and apple crumble.
Many thanks to Wendy and the Crafty Chef who certainly earned his money, his skill in creating a genuine Tapas experience has put the Crafty Cock firmly in the leading pack.
Great choice Simon.
A first Club visit to the wonderful Headland of Hartlepool. Only Simon was missing (again) as he was busy rehearsing for Willy Wonka (yes, I did say Wonka).
It felt a bit like coming home as some of us have eaten at the Duke of Cleveland on our annual site seeing trips to the various drinking establishments of the Headland. Rest assured any previous visits will have no influence on the evening’s dining assessment or end of season marking.
As usual we were made to feel welcome and drinks were ordered from the rich selection on offer, Cruz Campo, John Smiths, Neck oil and Coowarzzz. The drivers were happy with the Heineken O on draught.
The starters arrived and they were potato skins, popcorn scampi and panko coated chicken tenders.
Some had declined a starter but were instrumental in ordering another round of drinks! The relaxed atmosphere and attentive service allowed the night to flow along effortlessly.
The main meals came together and were ; Fish and Chips, battered haddock from Hodgeson’s of Hartlepool, Lamb Shank (cooked perfectly), a 10 oz prime ribeye steak (done just the way John likes it but the lack of a cooked cherry tomato clearly upset him), homemade Lasagna, 12 hour sous vide Belly Pork and a delicious Steak, mushroom and ale pie.
General comments were that the chips were underwhelming, overdone and ‘scrappy’. I thought the pie would have been better with mixed vegetables rather than droopy salad.
That being said the evening was a great success, the standard of the food was high and ‘The Duke of Cleveland’ will be there or there abouts when the voting takes place in November.
The Order of Gentlemen returned to the Copperstone Thai Restaurant in Linthorpe to present them with the coveted annual trophy. Only Simon was missing due to a heavy cold, Mark volunteered to be one of the drivers as he was nearing the end of his ‘dry’ January adventure. Well done Mark.
We were made to feel very welcome and our drinks order arrived very quickly, a selection of Peroni, Asahni lager (which means lightning) the drivers soft drinks and a couple of lucky Buddha’s completed the round.
While we waited for the starters to arrive the main event of the evening took place. The trophy was presented to Lewis, the Manager at Copperstone. He graciously accepted it and said he knew exactly where it was going to be displayed.
The selection of starters consisted of Korean BBQ chicken, a chicken satay skewer which was cooked to perfection, salt and pepper chicken, vegetable spring rolls and tempura king prawns. A varied choice which came with another round of drinks. The relaxed atmosphere enhanced the dining experience.
The main meals followed shortly after, a stir fry with meat and king prawns, Singapore noodles with cod and crunchy vegetables, three had gone for the hanging chicken skewer which was succulent and tender. Two had pushed the boat out and added an extra skewer!! Whilst the sticky rice is an acquired meal accompaniment, an additional choice of sauces to the peanut satay would have enhanced the meal. Other selections included the Thai green curry and the crying tiger steak. Both really delicious.
The new voting format allows the trophy winner to defend their crown in January. Fair to say this was a successful bid to retain the award and I feel they will be in the running come the dark winter nights.
We would like to thank Lewis and his team for a fantastic night.
